Does Your Home Have Ventilation Issues? The Signs You Should Know

You may have bought a new home or have been in your current home long enough no to notice subtle changes in your home’s air quality, but it’s important to be on the lookout for ventilation issues. Poor home ventilation in your home is more common than you might think and if left unchecked, it can lead to bigger problems down the road for both your home and your family. Let’s look at some of the telltale signs that you should be on the lookout for regarding your home’s ventilation.

Watch For Mold

Are you noticing more and more mold in different rooms around the house? A sure sign of poor ventilation is an increased mold buildup in your damper rooms like the laundry rooms and bathrooms. If you see a sudden outcropping of mold, then you may have a ventilation issue that is affecting the moisture levels in those rooms.

Allergies Getting Worse?

Sometimes it’s not a sign that you see in your home, but rather in your own body. If you or a loved one suffer from seasonal allergies and they seem worse this year or are lasting longer without relief then you may have a ventilation issue in your home. It could mean that the air in your home isn’t getting the proper particle filtration it once got.

Look For Water Or Other Buildup Around Vents

If you have floor vents, then you should take a flashlight and inspect each one about once a year if possible. If you were to go and check them right now, would you see water buildup around the edges or down into the first bend of the ductwork? That is a sure sign that air and moisture isn’t getting properly pushed through the system and out of your house like it should be. Also check for dirt, debris, and other possible buildups in your ducts around all of your floor and wall vents. It could be time to call a professional HVAC cleaner to get an estimate.

Check Air Output Levels In Each Room

While your AC unit or furnace is running, go into each room and put your hand over the output vent. Do you notice a strong and steady stream of air or does it feel weak and thready or non-existent? Does one room always feel colder or hotter than the others throughout the year? You may have a blockage or damage to your ducts leading to that room that would need to be addressed as soon as possible. Do a quick output check in each room this week! It only takes a few minutes and it could help diagnose a much larger problem before it gets out of control later.

Unnatural Dust Buildup

Yes, dust buildup is unavoidable but it shouldn’t get out of hand quickly. If you notice that dust and grime seem to be accumulating faster and more frequently than usual, then you might have a ventilation issue. Poor ventilation can lead to lower air circulation and filtration which means that airborne dust is no longer whisked away and is allowed to settle and build up. Pay attention to your home’s dust levels and especially if you notice one room getting dustier than normal. It could just be isolated to that area.
