A positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a dependable presence on the team are just a few reasons we’re recognizing Hilario Abundez, known to his coworkers as Rio, as FAMCO’s Employee of the Month.
Rio has been with FAMCO for a little over six months, working in picking and packaging. Although he was surprised to receive the award, his manager says the recognition reflects what his teammates see every day: Rio comes to work with a positive attitude, can be counted on, and is well respected by the group.
Starting a new job can mean learning new people, processes, and products all at once. For Rio, getting to know his coworkers came easily. The team was fairly small when he joined, which gave him the opportunity to connect with everyone early on.
Rio brought warehouse experience to the role, so picking orders felt familiar. The bigger learning curve was getting to know FAMCO’s products and where everything belongs. He began by picking orders and later learned packaging as well. He appreciates being able to switch between the two areas and contribute wherever he’s needed.
Rio starts his day by checking work orders and determining what needs to go out. From there, he prioritizes the day’s work and helps pick or package orders for shipment.
It’s a routine he describes as easygoing, but it calls for familiarity with the products and attention to what needs to ship. His openness to cross training has made him a versatile member of the group. His manager describes Rio as a reliable worker who is always willing to learn and brings a positive outlook to the team.
Rio is quieter by nature, and he wasn’t expecting his work to draw attention. When he found out he had won Employee of the Month, his first reaction was, “Oh really? How cool.” The recognition came as a welcome surprise.
Ask Rio what he likes most about FAMCO, and he talks about his coworkers.
“Everyone is really nice here,” he said. “You can talk to everyone.”
That approachability helped Rio feel comfortable when he started, and it remains an important part of his experience. He offers a practical reminder to anyone joining the team: give yourself time to learn.
“Keep an open mind about everything. You’re not going to learn everything right away,” Rio said. “If you have a good attitude, you will do very well here.”
It’s advice that reflects how Rio has approached his own first six months: learning the products, taking on a new area of work, and showing up ready to help.
When he’s away from the warehouse, Rio enjoys making things. He studied photography and likes exploring different creative projects, including mixed media art, DIY work, and making clothes. He doesn’t limit himself to one medium; he follows whatever interests him and gives it a try.
That curiosity is easy to recognize in the way Rio approaches work, too. He’s been willing to learn new tasks, adapt to a new team, and keep building his knowledge of FAMCO’s products.
