Description

The FAMCO WDC wind directional chimney cap is designed to be an effective solution to chimney downdraft in windy areas. The cap separates the wind stream as it flows over the cap, while the rotating hood is kept in proper position (relative to the wind) by the wind vane. Air movement past the hood creates a partial vacuum in the flue, enhancing draft efficiency and helping to prevent downdrafts. Quality constructed from heavy-duty 26 gauge galvanized steel. This product does not include a built-in bird screen. We recommend using Bostik High Temp Stainless Anti Seize on the rotating bracket and cleaning creosote buildup to ensure cap functions correctly and is able to rotate without issues, this should be done annually or else as needed.

The FAMCO WDC wind directional chimney cap is engineered to slip around the OD (outside diameter) of a single wall pipe. For double/triple wall pipe, we also offer our WCASS wind cap adapter which will fit inside an insulated, double or triple wall pipe to create a mount for your wind directional cap (sold separately).

The FAMCO WDC wind directional chimney cap comes in a range of diameters from 5 inch to 14 inch with heights ranging from 14½ inch to 27 inch, see our specs sheet for more details. The FAMCO WDC Wind Directional Chimney Cap is manufactured by FAMCO in the United States and comes with a 1-year warranty against product defects and workmanship. Perfect fit on the clay to pipe adapter. Super smooth swivel. Just needed to pick up some self-tapping screws, which went in smoothly.

  3. As installed it worked great– for a while. But the swivel mechanism is in the middle of the pipe, where creosote can build up and stop it from turning. If it stops turning in the wrong direction, it will funnel wind INTO the chimney, filling your house with smoke. Also, if you have an insulated chimney pipe, you’ll need the adaptor. Be SURE to attach it with six screws, as the adaptor skirt makes a great parachute. Mine flew completely off the chimney in a high wind. Good news: when it hit the ground it knocked the creosote-frozen swivel loose! If your chimney is subject to creosoting up, you’ll need to remove and clean out the cap every time you sweep the chimney.

Q
I have an 8” outside diameter double insulated stovepipe. If your cap slips over the stovepipe I don’t understand why I’d need an adapter? John asked on May 25, 2021
A

If you do not properly shield the outer wall of your pipe from the elements it could lead to corrosion or water damage.

This transition fits over the outside of the flue and features a drawbolt band to tighten against the outer perimeter.

Q
Heavy winds (20-30mps gusts) are blowing our hot water heater pilot and the main flame when it's heating. I can feel the wind blowing down the pipe when this happens. Do you know if the directional chimney cap will help for hot water heater pipes? Rick asked on December 13, 2020
A

Yes - this cap is designed to turn with the wind to block gusts from blowing down your pipes, and helps prevent backdraft in most applications where this is an issue.
